I’ve never met a family who doesn’t love a box of pop tarts for breakfast. What’s not to love about the sweet pastry filled with fruit and drizzled with sugary icing? Nothing! But what do you do when you’re in the mood for something a little savory? I have the answer for you: Bacon and Cheese Pop Tarts. I know it sounds a little unusual at first, but I assure you, these savory pop tarts are just the thing to get you up and moving each morning.

The pop tart dough is made with store-bought pie crust, filled with cooked bacon and a little cheese. Then, once baked, I top them with more cheese, crumbled bacon, and sometimes, a fried egg. The recipe is super simple, and so fun to make!

Bacon and Cheese Pop Tarts

Makes: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet refrigerated pie crust dough, unrolled
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 8 strips cooked bacon, chopped
  • 4 large eggs

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 F.

2. Transfer the pie crusts to a lightly floured surface and cut into eight 2 × 3-inch rectangles. It is easiest to measure the pieces with a ruler, score the crust with a knife, and cut it with a pizza cutter.

3. On top of four of the rectangles, place a large pinch of cheddar cheese and chopped bacon.

4. Place a second rectangle over the pockets and secure the edges with a fork. Make two or three slashes on top for ventilation.

5. Bake the pop tarts for 8-10 minutes on a lined cookie sheet, or until golden brown.

6. Remove pop tarts from the oven and top each with more cheese and crumbled bacon. Then, if desired, top with a freshly fried egg. Enjoy!
