Next time you get a hankering for donuts but want to stick to your healthy eating goals, try this fun trick! Turn apple slices into delicious little “donut” bites. It’s a simple snack hack that will please your sweet tooth, without overloading your carb count for the day. A great nosh for kids (and kids at heart), here’s how to make this quickie trick happen in your home:
Donut Apples
Makes: 4-6 “donuts”Ingredients:
- Large apple
- Spread (peanut butter, cookie butter, chocolate hazelnut, or cream cheese)
- Topping (sprinkles, nonpareils, chopped nuts, toffee bits, mini chocolate chips, or crushed cookies)
Directions:
1. Grab a giant apple (like one of those gloriously big ones). We love using fat, round Cameo and Braeburn apples, but any type will do.2. Slice the apple into 1/4-inch thick slices, cutting across the round center of the apple (instead of cutting through the core).
4. Now, spray the apples with a bit of lemon juice. Then, gently pat them dry with a paper towel. You’ll want the tops of the apples as dry as possible to make “frosting” them extra simple.
5. Grab a jar of peanut butter, cookie butter, chocolate hazelnut spread, or cream cheese, and add a thin layer on top of each slice.
6. Then, top with sprinkles or nonpareils. You can also decorate your “donuts” with chopped peanuts, chopped almonds, toffee bits, mini chocolate chips, or crushed cookies. Whatever you decide will be delicious!
Serve immediately (if you can let any go)!
